Super Easy Bibimbap! (비빔밥) | K-Drama Full House (풀하우스)

K-Drama Full House ( 풀하우스) 2004: A South Korean television series starring Song Hye-kyo, Rain, Han Eun-jung and Kim Sung-soo. Based on the manhwa Full House by Won Soo-yeon, the romantic comedy series aired on KBS2 on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 21:50 (KST) timeslot for 16 episodes from July 14 to September 2, 2004.

Han Ji-eun (Song Hye-kyo), an aspiring scriptwriter, lives in a house called "Full House" built by her late father. One day, her two best friends trick her into believing that she has won a free vacation. While she is away, they sell her house. On the plane, she meets a famous actor named Lee Young-jae (Rain). Through comedic events, they get acquainted during her vacation and when she returns, she discovers that her house has been sold to him. Though they do not get along with each other due to their contrasting habits, they agree to live with each other. At first, Ji-eun works as his maid in order to buy her house back. However, later, they enter into a contract marriage as Young-jae wanted to make his crush, Kang Hye-won (Han Eun-jung), jealous. Complications arise as Ji-eun and Young-jae become attracted to each other ❤️

You will find Bibimbap (비빔밥) in Full House, Episode 7 where Han Ji Eun (Song Hye Kyo) makes and eats Bibimbap (비빔밥) but she gets upset when Lee Young Jae (Rain) calls her bibimbap ‘dog food’ but one day when Han Ji Eun (Song Hye Kyo) wasn't around, Lee Young Jae (Rain) mixes up left-overs from the fridge and makes himself some Bibimbap (비빔밥). Han Ji Eun (Song Hye Kyo) arrives home and catches him happily eating what he just derisively called 'dog food" 😂 HAHAHA! Anyway, Bibimbap derives from Goldongban. It is a dish involving the same concept (a bowl of rice with vegetables, meat and sauce mixed in), which is far older, emerging sometime during the Joseon Period (14th-16th centuries). Goldongban had a ritualistic, and potluck, component to it.

  • 1 lb. boneless & skinless chicken breast (cut into bite size)

  • 4 cloves garlics (minced)

  • 3 TSP fresh ginger (minced)

  • 1 scallions (thinly sliced)

  • 1/3 cup soy sauce

  • 2 TBS sesame oil

  • 1 TBS brown sugar

  • 1 TBS mirin

  • 6 cups fresh spinach

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 2 large carrots (cut into julienne strips)

  • 1 TBS soy sauce

  • Shitake mushrooms

  • 1 TBS soy sauce

  • 1 TBS minced garlics

  • Fresh beansprouts

  • 1 TBS soy sauce

  • 1 TBS minced garlics

  • 1 cup zucchini

  • 1 TBS soy sauce

  • 2 TBS gochujang

  • 1 TBS sesame oil

  • 1 TBS sugar

  • 1 TBS cooked water

  • 1 TBS toasted sesame seeds

  • 1 TSP apple vinager

  • 1 TSP minced garlic

  • Cooked Rice

  • Kimchi

  • Large egg

  • Scallion

DISH 1 (CHICKEN): Place chickens into a mixing bowl and add in all the marinated ingredients (minced garlics and ginger, scallions, soy sauce, sesame oil, brown sugar and mirin. Mix until combined and refrigerate for 30 minutes. After half an hour, take out from the fridge and heat up some cooking oil. Stir fry for 3 - 5 minutes or until cooked through. Remove from skillet and set aside.

DISH 2 (SPINACH): Trim the spinach roots (if any) and wash the spinach in cold water thoroughly. Boil water in a cooking pot then add around 1 TSP of salt. once the water starts to boil, put the spinach into the pot and leave it for around 20 - 30 seconds. Drain the boiled water away and run cold water on the spinach for 1 - 2 minutes. Squeeze the spinach to remove excess water. Then cut the spinach into smaller pieces. I'm using baby spinach so there is no need to cut into smaller pieces. Add some salt & pepper and mix well with your hands. Done! Set aside.

DISH 3 (CARROTS): Stir fry carrots on a skillet and add in soy sauce. Continue to stir fry for 1 - 2 minutes. All done! Set aside.

DISH 4 (MUSHROOMS): Stir fry minced garlic until aromatic, add in mushrooms and continue to cook for 3 minutes. Add in soy sauce. Cook until aromatic. Done! Set aside.

DISH 5 (BEANSPROUTS): Stir fry minced garlic until aromatic, add in beansprouts and continue to cook for 2 minutes. Add in soy sauce. Cook until aromatic. Allllll done! Set aside.

DISH 6 (ZUCCHINI): Stir fry zucchini on a skillet and add in soy sauce. Continue to stir fry for 1 - 2 minutes. Lastly, stir fry sunny side up egg. You can also use raw egg but I prefer it fried. Alright, done! Set aside. Congratulations! You have completed ALL side dishes!

Now, let's assemble our Bibimbap! Put some cooked rice in your favorite bowl, then add meat, assorted vegetables, some Bibimbap sauce and finally sunny side up egg on top of the rice! Serve while it's warm.

Bibimbap is a Korean "mixed rice" not "compartmentalized ingredients placed on top rice." So, no matter how neat and wonderful the 'decoration' is. just go ahead and grab your favorite spoon, stir away, and put some elbow grease into it!
