Updated: Sep 16, 2021

Mulan (1998): American animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation for Walt Disney Pictures. The film's plot takes place in China during the Han dynasty, where Fa Mulan, daughter of aged warrior Fa Zhou, impersonates a man to take her father's place during a general conscription to counter a Hun invasion.

Mulan Dumplings: You may find dumplings featured twice in Mulan. Once when the Hua family is eating dinner before Mulan departs for training, and again when Mushu pulls one out to roast towards the end of the film! According to legend, Chinese stuffed dumplings were invented during the Han Dynasty by a man named Zhang Zhongjian. The event occurred when Zhang returned to his ancestral village during the winter, after a long absence. Dumplings is a broad class of dishes that consist of pieces of dough (made from a variety of starch sources) wrapped around a filling, or of dough with no filling. The dough can be based on bread, flour or potatoes, and may be filled with meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, fruits or sweets. Dumplings may be prepared using a variety of methods, including baking, boiling, frying, simmering or steaming and are found in many world cuisines.

"How about a girl who has a brain , who always speaks her mind?" - Mulan

DUMPLINGS INGREDIENTS (26 pcs):

  • 250g minced chicken

  • 2 stalks green onions (chopped)

  • 1 TSP grated ginger

  • 2 TSP garlics (minced)

  • 1/4 TSP salt

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1 TBS soy sauce

  • 1/2 TSP sugar

  • 1 TBS sesame oil

  • Store-bought gyoza skin/wrapper / wanton wrapper

DIPPING SAUCE INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/3 tsp chili pepper flakes

  • 1 TSP sugar

  • 1 TSP sesame seeds

  • 1 TSP sesame oil

  • 1 TBS green onion

  • 1 TBS rice vinegar

  • 2 TBS soy sauce

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Put minced chicken in a mixing bowl and add in all the ingredients (green onions, ginger, garlics, salt, black pepper, soy sauce, sugar and sesame oil. Mix until combined. Set aside for at least 30 minutes.

2. After 30 minutes, you can start to boil some water in a pot. To make the dumpling, firstly place a individual dumpling wrappers on a clean, dry surface and scoop about a teaspoon of filling in the center of each one. Moisten the edge of the wrapper with water using your finger before folding. Then fold in half and pinch the center. Next, gently pleat the edges 3x on each side. Repeat this steps for the rest of the dumplings. Set aside.

3. Repeat step 2 for the rest of the dumplings. Set aside. You can also make your own wrappers but that will consume a lot of time! I found that store-bought wrappers is easier to handle. Anyhow, I would love to try making homemade wrappers everything from scratch next time!

4. Once the boiling water is ready, place a parchment paper or non-stick steamer cloth on steamer plate and place your dumplings on top. Cover it with a lid and let it steam for 15 - 18 minutes. Done! Very simple, right? You may serve the dumplings while it's still warm with a simple dipping sauce ingredients listed above (chili pepper flakes, sugar, sesame seeds, sesame oil, green onion, rice vinegar and soy sauce). Enjoy your meal!

Steamed dumplings is the best as it gives you access to healthy carbohydrates, a macronutrient your body requires for energy. Each two-dumpling serving contains 12 to 22 g of carbohydrates, or 9.2 to 16.9 percent of the 130 g the Institute of Medicine recommends for daily consumption. So, eat well! 🥟
