Updated: Sep 7, 2021

Kiki Delivery Service | 魔女の宅急便 (1989): A story about a young witch named Kiki, on her mandatory year of independent life, finds fitting into a new community difficult while she supports herself by running an air courier service. It is a 1989 Japanese animated film written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, adapted from the 1985 novel by Eiko Kadono. According to Miyazaki, the movie portrays the gulf between independence and reliance in teenage Japanese girls.

“I think something's wrong with me. I make friends, then suddenly I can't bear to be with any of them. Seems like that other me, the cheerful and honest one, went away somewhere.”

- Kiki

Kiki's Fish Pie: You may find Kiki's the special dish in one of the scene where Kiki helped the went to the friendly old woman's house and help them made the fancy fish pie for their granddaughter's birthday. Sadly, the granddaughter express no gratitude for the pie which upset Kiki and upset me as well! 😠

By going to a friendly old woman's house and help them to do things around the house, Kiki is able to step back from her own life. She let's her problems go, help others and relaxes. Her face visibly begins to uncrunch and she slips back into her pleasant, peaceful self 🌸

  • 120g cake flour (sifted)

  • 30g icing sugar (sifted)

  • 75g salted butter (softened)

  • 1 egg yolk

  • 1/8 TSP baking powder (sifted)

  • Half pumpkin (cut in small cubes) - If you hate pumpkin... 😂 go ahead and use potatoes instead!

  • 1 TBS unsalted butter

  • A pinch of salt & pepper (omit the salt if you are using salted butter)

  • 1 cup diced onions

  • 1 TBS olive oil

  • 1 pcs fish fillet (cut into small pieces)

  • 1 TBS garlic

  • 1 TBS unsalted butter

  • A pinch of salt & pepper (omit the salt if you are using salted butter)

  • 1 TBS olive oil

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 TBS unsalted butter

  • 2 TBS all-purpose flour

  • A pinch of salt & pepper (omit the salt if you are using salted butter)

  • 12 pitted black olives

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

  1. Let's first make the pie crust! In a mixing bowl, add in softened butter and sifted icing sugar. Mix until incorporated.

2. Then add in egg yolk and mix until combined. Put in sifted cake flour and baking powder in the bowl.

3. Mix everything until the texture is smooth. Transfer it on a cling wrap. Wrap it up and refrigerate for 40 - 60 minutes. You can also use store-brought puff pastry to shorten your baking time and make your life easier!

4. At this point, you may preheat your oven to 180°C. Now, let's make the pumpkin puree. Again, you may use potato if pumpkin is not your 'thing'! Boil the pumpkin cubes in a cooking pot until softened. Remove the water and transfer it in a mixing bowl.

5. Add in butter, salt and pepper on the bowl and mash until combined. Set aside.

6. Then, fry diced onion on a pan until it turns golden brown. Add the fried onion into the pumpkin puree and mix until incorporated. All done! Set aside.

7. The fish fillet! Heat up cooking oil in a pan and fry minced garlic until aromatic. Add in fish fillet and continue to fry for another 5 minutes. Add in butter, salt and pepper. Let is simmer under medium heat for another 3 minutes. Done! Set aside. We are going to mix this fish together with the white roux later.

8. Now, let's make the white roux. Heat up cooking pan and put in oil and butter until melted. Then add in all-purpose flour. Cook for 3 minutes.

9. Gradually add milk to prevent any lumps. Once the roux is thicken, turn off the heat and add in the fried fish fillet earlier and mix until combined. All done! Set aside.

10. Take out the pie dough from the fridge and flatten it using roller.

10. We are going to divide the dough into three section. Firstly, for the top section x1. Secondly, for the fish shape x1 and thirdly for the long strips x6.

11. Get your baking pan and brush it with some olive oil. Put in the pumpkin puree mixture on the bottom layer.

12. Then, spread the béchamel sauce on top of the puree. Next, cover the whole thing with a sheet of pie dough. Remove the excess dough and use a spoon to tuck in the edges of the dough.

13. Place the strips on top of the pot pie. Then remove the excess sticking out. Spread the top with egg wash and top it with the fish shape. Again, spread egg wash on top of the fish shape.

14. For final touch, place olives at the end of each strips. That's it! Bake for 30 - 40 minutes until it turns golden brown.

All done! This is the cutest pie I have ever made and this remind me of Kiki who are very hardworking and never give up! It tastes a little sweet and savory but honestly some people may not like it so again, go ahead and use potatoes instead of pumpkin! I hope you enjoy today's recipe 😃
